Notes from the Field

Thoughts on Keeping Up To Date With Software Industry Customs and Practices

Perhaps the greatest joys and challenges in our work is keeping up with customs and practices in the software industry.  We are constantly learning about innovations and changes in the software industry technologies, including software and hardware technologies and management trends in sales and marketing, distribution, strategies, operations, finance and other fields.

These efforts provide us a firm foundation to understand critical issues, set context,  and work efficiently on behalf of our consulting clients, in our expert witness work, and in our academic activities developing and teaching courses.  An additional benefit is that we can share our learning and knowledge in academic and practitioner publications as well as participate in activities associated with professional organizations.

One of the trends that we’ve been following for nearly a decade is the gradual shift from on- premises provisioning to SaaS (software as a service).  This shift has had and will continue to have a tremendous impact on the software industry in development, innovation, distribution, pricing models, valuation, risk, sales, licensing,  mobile, and other key areas.

Recently, we wrote an article titled, “Assessing the Impact of Software As A Service (SaaS) Innovations on Disrupting the Enterprise Software Industry,”  that was published in a recognized academic journal, The Business Education Innovation Journal.  The article discusses how SaaS has effectively disrupted the software industry.   If you are interested in taking a look at the past and present to gain some perspectives of what may happen in the future you may enjoy reading the article.  To obtain a copy please click the button below:
